TPRS Workshop

(Scroll down for registration information.)

The Montgomery County Association of Teachers of Foreign Languages

enthusiastically invites you to a full day of training in

Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling.

TPRS has gone mainstream.  ACTFL, state and regional professional associations and conferences recognize the value of teaching with comprehensible input.

  • If you have heard of TPRS and CI, but aren’t sure what all the excitement is about, this workshop will be a great introduction for you.

  • If you have already experimented with TPRS, this workshop will help you consolidate your understanding and develop your CI teaching skills.

  • If you are an old hand practitioner of TPRS, this will be an inspiring refresher of why we do what we do, an overview of the state-of-the-art in a developing methodology, and a chance to meet and share with other Montgomery County like-minded language teachers.

It’s a perfect time of the year to take a break to reflect on what we do, to think about engaging things we can do in the classroom to finish up the year, and to begin thinking about what we might do over the summer to prepare for next year.  We hope you can join us.

The Workshop- TPRS

Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling is a dynamic methodology for second language acquisition. This method has proven successful in moving students towards proficiency in understanding, reading, writing and speaking in a second language.

TPRS emphasizes the use of comprehensible input in the target language, in repetitive and meaningful ways. Participating teachers will not only learn about, but also experience this input rich method by participating in a demonstration in French.

After teachers personally experience the effectiveness of TPRS, they will learn the basic three-step process and circling technique involved in producing abundant comprehensible input that maintains student interest. Teachers will learn about personalizing the classroom to engage all learners and differentiate instruction.

Teachers will have an opportunity to practice these techniques in a mock classroom environment while being coached to produce best practices within the method. Teachers will leave the workshop with experience, knowledge and practical coaching advice that will enable them to begin to use this methodology in their classrooms.

The Presenter- Michelle Kindt

Michelle is a National Board Certified Teacher of French.  She is an experienced and thoughtful practitioner, presenter, and coach of TPRS methods.  She has taught middle school and high school.  She has presented at PSMLA and other conferences, most recently at the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in March 2016.

She recently completed a series of Saturday workshops held once a month for five months at Hershey High School, which two members of the MCATFL Board (both Spanish teachers) have attended and highly recommend.  We are excited to be able to bring her closer to home.
